JUST SOME THOUGHTS
It is interesting to me that so many people tell me they love reading my newsletter. For me, it is not much fun. I struggle each month to figure out what to say.
My high school girlfriend Jackie loved to write and never ever had a problem writing volumes. (In her thirties she was the speech writer for the CEO of a large corporation.) We corresponded frequently during our college years. She attended Boston University and I went to Indiana University of PA so we did not visit each other often. I always knew her letters before looking at the return address. They were heavy, had 5 or so stamps on them, and were about half an inch thick. Over the college years Jackie's powerful script offered me hours of reading adventure.
My sister, Tricia, and I have had numerous discussions on how lazy people have become with their writing and speech. One of our mutual pet peeves is noun/pronoun agreements (or the lack thereof.) Example: Each of the students is responsible for their books. (Since "Each" is the singular subject, the sentence should read: Each of the students is responsible for his/her books.) If you pay attention while listening to newscasters on TV and radio or while reading the newspaper, you will all too frequently find similar mistakes.
In no way do I claim expertise in all things grammatical. In fact, when I run into an area of grammar about which I am unsure, I simply reformat the sentence or phrase! For instance, I totally avoid sentences where I have to make the decision to use "that" or "which." (Now look who's being lazy!) What I would hope is that professionally trained writers and speakers could pay a bit more attention to what they write and say. (By the way, if anyone catches my grammar errors, please feel free to let me know!)
To end this rambling, I will share with you a Cryptoquote I "solved" in a recent issue of The Intelligencer: "Is sloppiness in speech caused by ignorance or apathy? I don't know and I don't care." ~William Safire
As for my dear friend Jackie? Sadly, after graduation and a couple of marriages between us, we only connected perhaps another four or five times before she died in 1996 from cancer. I wish I had made the effort to see her more often while she was still alive.
"And that's all I have to say about that." ~ Forrest Gump
