WHAT'S WITH THE WEATHER?
Global warming or not, I cannot remember ANY summer (in my 50 plus years) being this hot and muggy or lasting this long.
I'm DONE with this heat!
'Nuff said.
______________
WELL, I BOUGHT A DELL!
I never thought I would purchase a Dell computer.
It was sometime in the 1990s, when I was still working for a computer reseller, that Michael Dell started marketing computers directly to large corporations. As resellers, we could not match his price point and lost a lot of business to the "new kid on the block." IBM, Compaq, and HP followed shortly thereafter - selling directly to the corporate world instead of through resellers. The beginning of the end for sales people such as myself.
So, why, after holding a grudge against Michael Dell for all these years, would I break down and buy one of his computers?
The answer is one guy, my computer tech, Rob from In-Line Tech, who swears by Dell and has had good luck with them for years. (You can read Rob's articles in the Faces & Places section.) This guys knows computers and has helped me out of several sticky computer situations. He talks geek and walks his talk!
My 6 year old tower computer has been on shaky legs for almost a year. I knew I would soon have to invest in a new one. About a month or so ago, after a series of crashes, Rob ran my computer through some tests and could not get it to stop "blue screening" - a technical term for "you're in big s..t trouble, dude!"
My options?
1. Reformat the hard drive. I would then have to reinstall all of my software and hope for the best.
2. Get a new computer. I would have to install all of my software on a brand new super fast computer.
3. Live with the old computer until it totally stopped working (the most stressful option.)
I chose door number 2 and now have a lightning fast Dell quad processor workstation, with a 2 TB hard drives running Raid 1 and Windows 7. It also has about a thousand USB ports and a bunch of other stuff I don't understand. I am still not using it 100% - not until I can be sure all my programs and drives work with Win 7. But I am anxious to get working on it full time. Just for the fun of the speed!
So, Rob, thank you for changing my mind. Let's hope this one lasts at LEAST as long as my last computer.
