______________ CHOICES I walked my dog Lexi this morning, just like I do every monring (and afternoon and evening). After she stopped to pick up in her mouth what was left of a splatted egg - probably thrown by a devilish teen, I started thinking about "my little girl's" strange eating habits. I feed her home-made organic chicken stew which she occasionally ignores. For treats I give her organic bisquits and bones which she leaves lying around the house for days before giving them a sniff.. On the other hand, deer poop, dried worms, and the neighbors' garbage will send her into a feeding frenzy! Why is that? Is it that dogs just aren't discerning with their food choices? After all, they are not educated like us intelligent humans, right. Unlike us, they don't know about cholesterol and trans fats and too much sugar. Unlike me, Lexi is not overweight. She does not lack energy for running and playing. She never suffers from insomnia and she is always ready to meet new friends. From the outside, Lexi's life looks perfect. ______________ RAVENCHASE Just a few last words about the Ravenchase event that took place in December. My partner, the "infamous Rasillon", wrote a novellette on the day's events. I thought I would include a short exerpt from it to give you an idea of what the clues are like: Here I have to admire both, Kristine and Robert Jenner, for their ingenuity and incredible patience. It must have taken them hours upon hours to get all those ornaments prepared. But, the purpose of the smaller scrolls and the slits in the paper scroll was now apparent. I was to weave the strips throughout the scrolls covering up certain letters and revealing others. The numbers that were revealed were to be filled in by letters found on the numbered boxes from earlier clues solved, such as the Parlor Clue. The message was ingenious, as it was imaginative. Five strips, one with a “tell” that gave away it’s correct positioning. Which left four strips to deal with. If my higher math functions of my brain were still working, four to the power of two, equaling a total of sixteen possible combinations for the strips, if the facing ones were to be only red or black letters facing out. Thirty-two possible combinations, if the colors of the letters facing outward were to be a mixture. It could take minutes, or it could take hours to unlock this Cryptex. Geoffrey Wynkoop ______________ SLEEP UP-DATE I forgot to say something about the newsletter in which I announced that I was having problems sleeping. (That particular newsletter was written in the wee hours of the AM!) Well, there sure are a lot of compassionate people out there! I received about half a dozen email responses from concerned readers who offered their own sleep remedies. Thank you folks! I appreciate your concern and feedback. Lately, I don't have many sleepless nights unless I choose to stay up to get some work done.
