LOCAL COLOR SEPTEMBER 2006
New Hope Trolley
by Marilyn Bullock
Starting Labor Day weekend,
we’ll all be singing, “Clang
,clang, clang went the trolley” in New Hope.
The New Hope Trolley “project” has been
spear-headed by Frank Policare, Vice President of The
Greater New Hope Chamber of Commerce, sponsor of the
new trolley service. Frank has worked diligently for
months to make the trolley, which will be free to passengers,
a reality.
Anyone who has ever been to New Hope knows that parking
is one of the most frustrating concerns of visitors,
business owners, and locals. As a local, I make my
runs into New Hope during off hours when I know I can
find easy parking. If I need to get into town during
the weekend, I bribe my husband into dropping me off
and picking me up or, if the weather is nice, I will
ride my bike into town. However, the introduction of
the new trolley system may change my shopping habits.
On weekends I will be able to park near one of the
pick up/drop off points and catch the shuttle to move
around town more quickly.
The trolley service is scheduled to run on weekends
at least through the end of 2006. If the trolley is
successful, the Chamber hopes to expand the operating
season in 2007. The 30 seat trolley, owned and run
by the Bucks County Trolley Company of Upper Black
Eddy, resembles the electric streetcar of days long
ago, which ran on tracks.
Our trackless trolley will
run from noon to 9 PM every weekend (with a short break
from 2:30 to 3:00) and is
scheduled to stop at the following locations:
- New Hope Solebury High School
- Triumph
Brewing Co. in Union Square
- Fisher’s Alley
at The Landing Restaurant on N. Main St.
- The Mansion
Inn on S. Main St.
- The Parry Mansion/New Hope Historical
Society across from the cannon
- The New Hope Visitor’s
Center at S. Main and Mechanic Streets
- Havana’s
Bar & Restaurant on S. Main St.
- New St. & Mechanic
St. Intersection
