Town & Country
Garden Tour
by Marilyn Bullock and Susan Sandor (Garden Tour Chair)
The really good news is that is doesn’t usually
rain on the day of the annual Town & Country
Garden Tour, hosted by the New Hope Historical
Society. In
fact, historically, the day of the tour is normally
beautiful and sunny and, most importantly DRY!
Last
year, however, it rained – a lot! I had
the distinct pleasure (?) of “garden sitting” that
day and figured that it would be quite a boring
day. After all, who would be crazy enough to
come out on
a cold, cloudy, rainy day to look at a bunch
of water drenched, drooping, muddy gardens? Ahhh
-
how naïve
was I to the world of Garden Zealot-dom!
I
was most amazed at large numbers of people who visited
the gardens despite the poor weather
conditions.
I
was also taken by the friendly, upbeat nature
of these garden folk some who had traveled
many
miles
to spend
the better part of their Saturday getting wet!
This year, I am prepared. Rain or shine, I
know I will
see LOTS of wonderful, energetic people – who
LOVE gardens and gardening!
This
year the self guided Town & Country Garden
Tour will take place on Saturday, June 5th
(rain or shine) from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The
tour will guide
garden
enthusiasts to eight luscious private gardens
in Bucks County. Four of the gardens have celebrity
status and
the other four have been labeled prize winners
by
the Garden Tour Committee. Of
the eight gardens, one is owned by a famous
New York City roof top garden designer who is
opening both his home and garden for the tour.
The co-owner of another garden won "Best
of Show" at the 2004 Philadelphia Flower
Show for an exhibit designed for the North American
Rock Garden Society. Yet another is featured
in a recently printed coffee table book by Hearst
Publications.
Tickets are limited and moving fast. The gardens
are so spectacular that ticket holders are advised
to begin early at any garden they choose since
they may want to linger and absorb the sights,
sounds, fragrances and ideas.
Proceeds
from the event are earmarked for the development
of the gardens at the 18th century
Parry Mansion Museum, owned and operated by the
New Hope Historical Society.
