Aztec Two-Step

A Special Holiday Show as
Renowned Folk-Rock Duo Marks 40 Years Together

When: Saturday December 10, 2011, 8pm
Where: New Hope Winery, 6123 Lower York Road. New Hope, PA 18938
Tickets: $25, $35 available at http://www.newhopewinery.com/ or 215-794-2331

New York, N.Y. – Celebrated folk-rockers Aztec Two-Step, ''possibly the best acoustic duo in the world today,'' according to Richard Cuccaro in Acoustic Live (2004), will perform a special Holiday Concert at the New Hope Winery as part of their 40th Anniversary tour. The show will include ATS's "fan favorites" as well as some of the duo's favorite holiday tunes.
Since 1971, Rex Fowler and Neal Shulman have been writing and performing songs that helped make their generation's musical memories.
They are renowned for bringing the folk-rock music of the 1960s into the '70s and beyond, and when they burst on the scene with their Elektra Records debut in 1972, reviewers immediately recognized the "intellectual lyricism" and "ethereal harmonies" they share with their legendary predecessors Simon & Garfunkel.

Forty years later, Aztec Two-Step continues to be one of acoustic music's most respected and popular acts.

The critically acclaimed duo takes its name from the poem "A Coney Island of the Mind" by award-winning poet, painter and publisher Lawrence Ferlinghetti, who had strong ties to the "Beat'' movement, including writers like Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac. According to Kerouac's biographer, Dennis McNally, The Persecution and Restoration of Dean Moriarty (On The Road), a song from Aztec Two-Step's self-titled debut, was the first song written about Kerouac's iconic American novel, On The Road. That song is included on the 2007 Rhino Records release Forever Changing-The Golden Age of Elektra Records 1963-1973, a five-CD box set that tells the story of this landmark record label and the music that defined an era.

In 1987, the duo's Living in America received the New York Music Award for Best Folk Album and was named in Billboard's year-end critic's poll.
Continuously praised in major media outlets such as Rolling Stone, Aztec Two-Step was the subject of a documentary that aired on PBS in 1999, following numerous appearances on TV and radio shows such as David Letterman, King Biscuit Flour Hour and World Café Live.

The Boston Globe lauded the duo's most-recent studio release, 2005's Days of Horses, saying "fans of the duo's harmony-driven tunes and easygoing acoustic guitar riffs will recognize their James Taylor-meets-Simon & Garfunkel sound. What's new is the mood. This album sits back on its haunches as Rex Fowler and Neal Shulman look back wistfully at American pop culture and their own ride through it."
In June of 2007, thirty-five years after the release of their debut album, Aztec Two-Step performed the album's The Persecution and Restoration of Dean Moriarty (On The Road) in Lowell, Mass., at a very special Lowell Celebrates Kerouac Festival, as the author's hometown marked the 50th anniversary of the publication of On The Road. That same month, Real Simple, a popular national lifestyle magazine, named the duo's first album one of the top five classic folk albums, joining work by superstars Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, Tom Rush and Phil Ochs.

In 2008, Aztec Two-Step released Time It Was-The Simon & Garfunkel Songbook (Red Engine Records), a live album of S&G's music, featuring narration by legendary DJ and music historian Pete Fornatale, who provides commentary and insights based on his interviews with Simon & Garfunkel.
Fowler and Shulman anticipate the official release of Cause & Effect, a new studio CD to commemorate their 40th Anniversary, in early 2012. A collection of 16 songs of social significance produced by Paul Guzzone, it features longtime bassist Fred Holman, who has accompanied the duo on many occasions in their storied history. The album is a combination of re-worked previously recorded songs and newly mined material.
Aztec Two-Step's ability to impress audiences with intelligent songwriting, dazzling acoustic lead guitar and inspiring harmonies continues not only to endure, but to thrive, 40 years after a chance meeting at an open stage in a Boston coffee house.

Get Lost
Beatrice Bork and Joe Kazimierczyk

Art Exhibit: Nov 11 - Dec 4, 2011
Opening Reception: Saturday, November 12, from 5 to 8 pm
Coffee and Conversation: Sunday, December 4, 2 to 5 pm
"Get Lost" at Artists' Gallery this November

Landscape painter Joe Kazimierczyk and animal artist Beatrice Bork invite you to "Get Lost" this November as they explore the outdoors through their art. Get lost in a moment, in nature, in discovery - "Get Lost" at Artists' Gallery.

Both artists do much of their work in nature. Kazimierczyk revels in the peaceful scenery of New Jersey's farmsteads and back roads and translates the experience with his talents as an oil painter. Bork's love of birds and animals comes through in wonderfully detailed watercolor paintings that place her subjects into artistic harmony with their natural surroundings.

"We both literally do get lost in our work," says Kazimierczyk. "In the search for and exploration of our subjects, and in the act of creating our artwork."
"My interpretation of 'Get Lost' is in the sense that you let go of the everyday stresses and become one with where you are, tune in by tuning out—really seeing what's right in front of you." says Bork. "Often that leads to finding so much more about nature, and in turn, about yourself."

"Losing yourself in Beatrice's or Joe's world is a wonderful way to spend some time," said Gallery spokesperson Laurie Nicholson. "Theirs is really soul-renewing work. I believe Joe's poetic landscapes might actually have the power to lower your blood pressure, while Bea's thoughtful portraits of animals reveal a wisdom and serenity that warms the heart."

"Get Lost" will be on display at Artists' Gallery in Lambertville from Friday, November 11, to Sunday, December 4. The public is invited to an opening reception Saturday, November 12, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the Gallery.

Christopher Kline, a local artist and business owner, will host the second Push Pull Print art show and sale on December 2, 2011. The show entitled "Push Pull Print." will take place at the Countryside Gallery and Radhouse Studio in Newtown, PA. The show features twenty local artists that have incorporated screen printing into their preferred medium of art. Push Pull Print includes: web designers, oil, acrylic and watercolor painters, sculptors and graphic designers. Throughout the process, Kline helped inspire the artists to see various ways that screen printing can enhance their work.

The title," Push. Pull. Print", represents the challenge Christopher gave each artist to "push yourself, pull your ideas together, and express them through print." Kline, an oil painter and owner of Kanika Studios, a graphic design and screen printing business, has invited these talented artists into his world of screen printing. When asked about his inspiration behind the show, Kline says," I am trying to push myself outside my boundaries, and I thought it would be interesting to push a group of artists outside their comfort zones to see what we could accomplish."

The success of the Push Pull Print Art Show and Sale held last June motivated Chris to keep the movement rolling ahead. Over 250 people attended the opening night of Push Pull Print in the summer of 2011. It was a highly successful event for the artists involved, and was even able to raise over $350 for the local SPCA by allowing guests to screen print their own event T-shirt for a small donation.

Since the show's inception, Kline created a Facebook Page named Push. Pull. Print. with inspirational ideas for participating artists, as well as those who want to follow the group, its activities, and the process. Chris also maintains a blog marking artist's progress on his personal website, www.christopherkline.net .

AFTER 40 YEARS, THE GHOSTS IN THE VALLEY
ARE BETTER THAN EVER!

There are certain books that wind into the heart. We read them when we’re young, we remember them when we’re old. We read them once, and we come back to them again. Over the decades, Ghosts in the Valley and More Ghosts in the Valley, written by Bucks County’s well-known author, Adi-Kent Thomas Jeffrey, have proven to be such books. Their haunting power has reached from one generation into another.
The first book in the collection, Ghosts in the Valley, made its debut in the year 1971. It was a book of humble origins—a slim, paperback volume bound together with staples no less and easily identifiable by its no-frills basic black cover with the “drippy” white lettering.  But in spite of its plain appearance, the book caught on almost immediately. In less than a year, 40,000 copies of this simple “pamphlet-looking” book had been sold. Over the last four decades, this timeless collection of ghost stories has continued to be a popular and well-known book. The newest edition, scheduled for release this coming October, will mark its tenth printing.
The second book in the series, More Ghosts in the Valley, was first released in 1973. Needless to say, this next volume of spooky, spellbinding stories proved to be as popular as the first. Like its predecessor, “More Ghosts” has been reissued many times throughout the years.
In the early ‘80s, Adi-Kent Thomas Jeffrey started a new business venture—The Ghost Tours of New Hope. Thirty years later, crowds of tourists and local visitors are still flocking to these lantern-lit “haunted history” tours. Jeffrey dubbed New Hope, Pennsylvania, “the most haunted village in America” and helped to put it on the map as a primary destination for ghost hunters.
After moving to Washington, D.C., Mrs. Jeffrey began working on the last volume of ghost stories that would complete her trilogy of “Haunted Valley” books. Unfortunately, she never lived long enough to finish the book. After her death, her daughter, Lynda Elizabeth Jeffrey, assumed the role of “literary heir.” Haunted Village & Valley was published posthumously in 2011.
To celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Ghosts in the Valley, the little book that started such a big “ghost buzz” so many years ago, the author’s daughter decided it was time for an updated version. The substance of the book remains the same. The stories are timeless… chilling and thrilling accounts of supernatural phenomena. But, to make the stories even more appealing, a variety of images, illustrations and photographs have now been added to accompany the text. More Ghosts in the Valley also received a “literary face-lift” as well.
The newly revised editions include attractive new covers, fresh formatting, interior photographs and illustrations, a foreword by the Amazing Kreskin, plus a supplemental section of new content added at the end of each book.
The ghosts in the valley are ready to make their comeback, and, believe me… they’re better than ever!

The newly revised editions of Ghosts in the Valley and More Ghosts in the Valley are scheduled for release in October, 2011. Books will be available in selected regional book stores as well as online.

Senior Advisor Presents Holistic Approach to Reducing Caregiver Stress
at Women’s Business Forum November 2

According to a recent Gallup poll, the most stressed-out person in America is a caregiver,” says Pamela Eelman, CSA, CHHC, director of community outreach for Home Instead Senior Care in Plumstead Township. “That means this could be the first generation of women who will not outlive men!”

It’s no wonder, then, that Eelman, a certified senior advisor and holistic health counselor, is passionate about providing respite for caregivers. She offers six simple steps to managing your priorities and your day to reduce family caregiver stress, including vital things you must do for yourself.

Just in time for the pressure-filled holidays, this presentation at the Women’s Business Forum’s regular November Wednesday morning meeting, will deliver a fast-paced, practical way to change caregivers’ lives for the better. The FREE meeting is 8-9:00am on Wednesday, November 2, at the James Lorah House, 132 N. Main Street, Doylestown, PA 18901.

A mother of three, Eelman was a holistic health counselor serving women caring for their aging loved ones when she became the caregiver herself. She now provides respite for those same women. She takes a holistic view of the elder as part a whole family instead of the sole person needing care. She shares practical advice on how you can care for yourself—so you can continue to care for your whole family.

Every year, hundreds of locals and visitors celebrate Halloween events in New Hope – this year via the Third Annual Mischief March, the Time Warp Masquerade and live performances of the cult classic, The Rocky Horror Show.

“New Hope is an enchanted historic town and with a lot of Halloween spirit,” commented Dianna Berger-Purciello, Halloween events coordinator for the New Hope Chamber of Commerce. “October is a magical, spirited month in New Hope and together with the Chamber of Commerce, I have put together a great lineup of events that will bring out the haunting spirit in everyone.”

The theme of this year’s Mischief March is “The Walking Dead”, based on AMC's hit series The Walking Dead. The Mischief March will captivate and delight as wickedly dressed, zombies, ghouls, witches and devils travel the streets of New Hope. Mischief Marchers will convene between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Stockton Ave in front of the New Hope Chamber of Commerce office.  For $15 per person, marchers will be treated to a private reception with cocktails, light hors d’oeuvres, great music and heart pounding drumming followed by discounted food and drinks at supporting restaurants. Participants must be in costume and 21 years or older.  Drag is welcome.

Conrad Kubiak, master drum maker and owner of Spirit in The Woods, will lead an outdoor drum circle and instruct marchers in drumming up spirits.  Kubiak is offering to costumed participants a 10% discount on drums and a raffle for a full- sized, 13" head, 24" inch tall D'Jemde drum.  Other musicians and jammers are welcome to attend and participate.

At 8 p.m. the costumers, accompanied by musicians, will begin their march through the streets of New Hope, acting out their characters and dancing through participating establishments where patrons can vote for their favorite costumes.  At midnight contest winners will be announced on stage at Havana Bar & Restaurant.  Prizes will be awarded for most original, sexiest, scariest, best acting performance and best musical performance.

Dick joins with the Symphonia to present “Magnificent Sounds,” a program which includes Beethoven’s “Emperor” Concerto – the last, and some say the most majestic, of Beethoven’s concertos.  Saint-Saens Organ Symphony, op. 78 expands on the evening’s theme of magnificent sound by combining the transcendent power of the organ with the full orchestra. The 2011 Autumn in Bucks County House Tour includes:

Edward Redfield Homestead, Center Bridge
The former home and studio of Edward Redfield (1869-1965), the celebrated artist of the Pennsylvania Impressionist painting movement, under went a major renovation in 2009 by interior designer Bruce Norman Long.  Great care was taken to preserve the historic elements of the property that Mr. Redfield purchased as a 100-acre farm back in 1898; many of which are depicted in Redfield’s paintings that are displayed in museums and private collections internationally.  The artist’s former studio is now the living room where a massive window was restored to allow views of the canal and Delaware River beyond.  The bridge to New Jersey, the original subject of Redfield’s most famous works “The Burning of Center Bridge,” is now seen from the window restoration.  Another gem is the charming springhouse visible from the dining room window.  This same view was the subject of Redfield’s painting “South Window” which featured his wife Elise gazing at the springhouse and the gardens beyond.  The new addition of a sunroom, mudroom and garage/guest suite blend seamlessly into this magnificent 10-acre property.

The Mill House, Carversville
From mill worker’s house to show home, The Mill House has been evolving for three centuries.  Originally built by Thomas Ellicott in circa 1784 as a two-story stone residence for workers at the neighboring mills.  Its first metamorphosis occurred when the Knights of Pitheas enlarged the house to three apartments during the mid-1860s.  The house’s next identity took place when renowned artist, Charles Ward maintained it as his first studio in the 1930s.  Here is where he completed his famous mural, “Progress and Industry.”  Then in 1990, the property became a single-family dwelling and today is a stunning showcase of interiors inspired by antiques, art and travel.

Double Tree Farm, New Hope
This circa 1800 horse farm radiates the warmth and care that has been put into this home for over three decades.  Renovations have been made over the years to accommodate the owners growing family of children, grandchildren and their many pets.  Upon entering the house you will be welcomed by a room filled completely with antique working trains and accessories from several generations.  The property has a beautiful barn, guesthouse, several out buildings and many acres for endless horseback riding, which the homeowner enjoys today.  Double Tree is an example of the quintessential traditional Bucks County horse farm.

Playwicky, New Hope
Built in 1923 by William Bottomley for Morris L. Cooke as a weekend retreat, Playwicky is reminiscent of a lake retreat in Northern Italy.  Roughly translated in the Lenni Lenape language, Playwicky means “a place full of turkeys.”  The current owners bought the house in the mid-1990s.  After studying Bottomley and keeping in his aesthetic of design, they went on to renovate and add to the house.  The home feels spacious with views of the river from almost every room; steps wind down to terraces, gardens, ponds and an octagonal guesthouse.  The home also features the art of master ironsmith Samuel Yellin.  In 1929, Playwicky was described in House Beautiful as a “playhouse of two traveled grownups.”  That description still holds true today.

Ruinas, New Hope
Spanish for ruins, Ruinas is the brainchild of two environmentally conscious homeowners.  Not only is the house space efficient, but it’s 100% “green.”  The use of eco-friendly and energy efficient materials throughout the home are in every room including: paint, flooring, cabinets, geothermal heating and cooling, salt free reverse osmosis water filter system, all LED lighting and wind power from PECO to power the rest of the home.  The result is a zero carbon footprint.  The foundation and landscape is beautiful Bucks County while the interiors have a more contemporary European style.  Ruinas is an inspiration to the “green” concept and showcases the future of modern living.

Renowned Abstract Contemporary Artist Jeanne Bessette Opens
Exhibit at Bucks County Gallery of Fine Art

September 10, 2011 - New Hope PA, Contemporary Painter Jeanne Bessette unveils a series of new work using humor and a heart filled awareness of who we are as human beings.

September 1, 2011 (NEW HOPE, PA) – Bucks County Gallery of Fine Art in New Hope, PA, will open a major exhibition of recent works by contemporary abstract artist Jeanne Bessette. titled “Figuratively Speaking”. The artist’s reception will be held on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 4 - 6 p.m. The event will also feature a lively painting demonstration on Saturday afternoon between 2 - 4 pm. The show runs through October 31.
Raleigh, NC native Jeanne Bessette is best known for her large scale paintings of emotive abstracted figures that combine subtle layers, luminescent glaze and bold freehand scribbles. What’s most striking is her ability to harness a childhood vision and translate it into a mature concept. Her use of pungent color and contrast creates memorable pieces that allow for unique experiences upon every viewing.
“I always have an intention in mind or a message to share. My work usually erupts in spontaneous bursts of energy. Embracing my fearless side has allowed me to become more adventurous and intuitive. When you see my work, you’ll learn something about the journey I took in creating it” Bessette explains.

Bessette’s works in this show expands upon her journey that explores the emotions of our everyday landscape from the quirky to the ridiculous.

“We are all of these and we need to lighten up on ourselves” says Bessette and she further describes her philosophy by sharing “I’m compelled to paint the wild and mysterious circus of our passions and fears.”
Her current works have evolved from her pure abstracts which, she says, provide “the “homes” and landscape in which her figures live and breathe. According to Bucks County Gallery owner and director Howard Cooperman, “Bessette’s process reveals itself in layers of complicated emotions, childlike wonder and limpid transparency. Her works are vibrant, glowing and seemingly alive.”
Cooperman describes the 20 plus canvas pieces in the show as “powerful, playful and must-haves. She shares all of herself and holds nothing back. She’s prolific, to be sure – with growing interest in her work nationally.”
“If you’ve ever kicked yourself for missing an artist on the upswing before they achieve national prominence, take advantage of this opportunity to meet Jeanne Bessette now,” Cooperman advised.

Join us for a cocktail reception featuring Jeanne's most recent paintings and meet her on October 1st between 2 & 6pm and watch as she completes a painting live before your eyes.
The attached image is a 30" x 30" acrylic painting titled "Worry Wart" and will be available on a first come basis.

Bucks County Gallery is located at 77 W. Bridge Street, (just above the train tracks),  in New Hope PA. We are now the area's largest Fine Art Gallery featuring Contemporary and Traditional original paintings and sculpture. Pennsylvania Impressionists
& the New Hope Circle
Gratz Gallery & Conservation Studio

Gratz Gallery & Conservation Studio proudly presents, Pennsylvania Impressionists & the New Hope Circle, from Saturday, October 8 through Saturday, December 31, 2011. This special exhibition focuses exclusively on Pennsylvania Impressionist artists, including Walter Baum, Rae Sloan Bredin, William Lathrop, Harry Leith-Ross, Antonio Martino, Edward Redfield, George Sotter and others.  Pennsylvania Impressionists & the New Hope Circle strives to pay homage to the creativity and adept skill of this unique school of painters. The exhibition will feature over 40 paintings by artists who settled and worked in the New Hope area in the first half of the 20th century.

Pennsylvania Impressionists & the New Hope Circle will feature an array of highly collectable American Impressionist paintings. A particularly beautiful painting, by Rae Sloan Bredin, features the artist’s young daughter quietly sitting for her father as she clutches a small ragdoll. Also included is a rare and vibrant floral still life by John Folinsbee. Perhaps one of the largest and most important paintings in the exhibition depicts gorgeous clouds rolling above Bucks County farmland, by George Sotter. There are also snow scenes by Walter Baum, Fern Coppedge and Harry Leith-Ross, as well as depictions of the Delaware Valley throughout other seasons.

Pennsylvania Impressionists & the New Hope Circle aims to expand upon a concurrent and extraordinary exhibition at the James A. Michener Art Museum titled The Painterly Voice (October 22, 2010-April 1, 2012). The Gallery is a longtime supporter of the James A. Michener Art Museum and a sponsor of The Painterly Voice, an ambitious exhibition of approximately 200 works of art by more than 50 Bucks County artists, focusing particularly on the works of the artist of the New Hope art colony. Pennsylvania Impressionists & the New Hope Circle will feature paintings by many of the artists included in the show at the James A. Michener Art Museum; allowing an even further exploration of each artists’ work.

Paul Gratz, owner and head-conservator of Gratz Gallery, purchased his first Pennsylvania Impressionist painting nearly 35 years ago, and from that point on he was dedicated to promoting this exceptional group of painters.  Gratz Gallery has been representing the work of the Pennsylvania Impressionists for more than a decade, having bought and sold some of the most brilliant examples of paintings from the school.  In the late 1800s artists began settling in the geographic area of the Delaware Valley surrounding New Hope, in part because of the beautiful vistas the area offered, but also because of the accepting, nurturing atmosphere of the area. The ever expanding group of painters was stylistically distinct, yet sought each other’s advice and encouragement as artists; New Hope was truly a community of creativity! Today, the New Hope Circle is recognized nationally, if not internationally, as among the most eminent of the contributing groups to the American Impressionist art movement.

A catalog of the show will be available on the Gratz Gallery & Conservation Studio website prior to the event. Visit www.gratzgallery.com to preview the exhibition.

Located at 68 S. Main Street in Doylestown, Gratz Gallery and Conservation Studio features 19th and 20th century American Art, as well as museum quality fine art conservation services and custom framing.  The gallery is open Wednesdays through Saturdays, 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. and Sundays, 12:00 noon – 6:00 p.m., as well as by appointment. “HALLOWEENVILE” DOCUMENTARY
to have world premier showing at the
ACME SCREENING ROOM in Lambertville, NJ

October 28 and 29, 2011 at 7 p.m.

HALLOWEENVILE, a documentary about he celebration of Halloween in Lambertville, NJ will have its world premier screen at the ACME SCREENING ROOM, 25 South Union Street, Lambertville N.J. on October 28 and 29, 2011 at 7 p.m. A talk-back with the filmmakers will follow the screening.
For 11 months out of every year the sleepy river town of Lambertville, N.J. goes about its daily activities with kindness and goodwill. Once a half-way stop for Revolutionary War soldiers on their journey from Philadelphia to New York, and then an industrial community with steam trains and barges on the Delaware, Lambertville is now a mecca for artists, artisans, musicians, antique dealers and restaurateurs. Victorian homes and Federal Row-Houses still grace the streets, and animal lovers abound.
But come October, like a werewolf on a full moon or a vampire at sunset, Lambertville transforms itself into a virtual haunted house of witches, ghouls, goblins and trolls, becoming to Halloween what Mardi Gras is to New Orleans. 3000 people turn out for the event each year!
Lambertville filmmakers Gary P. Cohen, Paul Kaye & Jann Kniskern attempt to find out why.
Shot last October, the documentary features a narration by Deborah Reed, star of TROLL 2 and music by Garland Jeffreys.
Admission for the screening and discussion is $10.00 for members of the Acme Screening room and $15.00 for non-members.

Robert Beck, 215-982-0074

Robert Beck Portrays Philadelphia Heartbeat

The Rosenfeld Gallery is presenting Philadelphia Heartbeat, a series of oil paintings by Bucks County plein air painter Robert Beck, from October 9th through the 30th.  Beck is known for his visual examinations of the places, occupations, and artifacts of our time, and this exhibition focuses on some of the unique elements that drive the city and form its identity.  This exhibition includes 24 paintings that address both the familiar and the seldom seen, depicted in the award-winning artist’s strong and distinctive voice.  Not just urban images but decidedly Philadelphian, with subjects as diverse as the interior of Fiorella’s sausage store in the Italian Market, the Amtrak control room at 30th Street Station, and the Firemen of Squad 47 making dinner at the station in Grays Ferry.

“Beck uses great finesse in depicting how he feels about a particular place at a particular time, without crossing the line into expressionism and violating the verisimilitude,” says gallery owner Richard Rosenfeld. “I am delighted to exhibit these well-conceived gems.”

Robert Beck attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and maintains a gallery and art academy in Lambertville, NJ.  Both the Michener Museum in Doylestown and the Museum of the City of Trenton have presented in-depth exhibitions of his work.

“I’ve experienced Philadelphia as a child, an art student, and an adult, and this has been a great opportunity to go a layer deeper,” says Beck, whose images include interiors, nocturnes, and cityscapes.  “These paintings describe my encounter, how it feels to be in these environments.  They are about me as much as they are about Philadelphia.  I’m very excited to have this work shown by one of the premier galleries in the city”

Philadelphia Heartbeat opens with an artist’s reception on Sunday, October 9th, 12-5pm.  Rosenfeld Gallery is located at 113 Arch St., in Philadelphia. You can view the work at www.robertbeck.net, or call the Rosenfeld Gallery at 215-922-1376 for information.

Riverside Symphonia Opens New Season with “Magnificent Sounds”

The Riverside Symphonia opens its 2011-2012 Season with internationally acclaimed classical pianist and Steinway Artist, James Dick, on Friday, September 30 and Saturday, October 1 at 8 PM in Lambertville, NJ

The superb acoustics of the Church of St. John the Evangelist, make this a great venue for this powerful work.

James Dick has brought to life the works of classical composers for audiences from New York’s Carnegie Hall to Academic Capelle in St. Petersburg, Russia. Dick’s playing melds modern-day energy and technique with an Old World graciousness and civility, resulting in a passionate sound that keeps audiences engrossed.

A Texas native, Dick is also the founder of the International Festival-Institute at Round Top, which is one of the most distinguished musical education programs in the US. The institute offers programs throughout the year, as well as an international summer music festival and institute for young artists developing their skills in solo, chamber music and orchestral repertoire.

Global issues, local connections. Let’s talk about Environmental Justice.

Everyone is talking about the environment, but how deep is the conversation?

Friends of Lambertville Library in association with Hunterdon Land Trust will be hosting Face to Face: Community Conversations on Environmental Justice, a program made possible by the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities, in order to deepen the community conversation on this important topic.

Face to Face will feature a screening and scholar-led discussion of Crude: The Real Price of Oil, on October 1, 2011 at 7 pm at ACME Screening Room, 25 S. Union St. Lambertville (www.AcmeScreeningRoom.org).   Crude, from filmmaker Joe Berlinger, examines a lawsuit by indigenous Ecuadorians against oil company Chevron which, they claim, has systematically polluted their country. The screening and discussion will be hosted by Professor Chris Rasmussen, a New Jersey scholar from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Professor Rasmussen will distribute three short environmental readings for later discussion. Lambertville resident Vince Uhl of Uhl & Associates: Groundwater Hydrologists and Environmental Specialists was involved with the legal case featured in the film and will be present for Q & A after the film.

Then, on October 22 at 7pm, Professor Rasmussen will lead a related-reading and discussion program on the theme at ACME.  Readings for the October 22 discussion will be available for registered participants to pick up at ACME Screening Room on Oct 1, 2011, after 7 pm and each Friday/Saturday night through Oct 22, 2011, during business hours (7 pm - 10 pm).

The programs will be free/suggested $5.00 donation at the door which will go to the Friends of Lambertville Library’s ACME film program.  Pre-registration is required and space is limited to 49 attendees.  Patrons can pre-register for both programs at acmescreeningroom.ticketleap.com.

“The Friends are delighted our ACME film program can serve as a forum for such an important community issue, environmental health” Says Sara Scully, Program Producer.  “And partnering with Hunterdon Land Trust, an organization critical to safeguarding our environment, is an honor.”

“The health of our environment and the health of our communities are deeply intertwined” says Hunterdon Land Trust Director of Outreach Alison Levine, “and the land trust is excited to be a part of this conversation on environmental justice. The interconnected nature of the environment means that there is no your backyard or my backyard. There is only one yard and we all need to care for it. I look forward to the chance to connect with the community about how we all can play a role in creating a healthy environment and healthy communities.”

Crude: The Real Price of Oil has won numerous awards for documentary filmmaking and was an official selection at the Sundance Film Festival. The film provides an inside look at the infamous $27 billion “Amazon Chernobyl” case. The plaintiffs claim that Texaco – which merged with Chevron in 2001 – spent three decades systematically contaminating one of the most bio-diverse regions on earth, poisoning the water, air and land. The plaintiffs allege that the pollution has created a “death zone” in an area the size of Rhode Island, resulting in increased rates of cancer, leukemia, birth defects, and a multiplicity of other health problems. They further allege that the oil operations in the region contributed to the destruction of indigenous peoples and irrevocably impacted their traditional way of life. Chevron vociferously fights the claims, charging that the case is a complete fabrication, perpetrated by “environmental con men” who are seeking to line their pockets with the company’s billions.

The screening of Crude is part of NJCH’s ongoing environmental justice-themed programming. A number of libraries throughout the state will host screenings of Crude: The Real Price of Oil to spur community discussion on issues surrounding environmental justice in New Jersey. ACME Screening Room is a project of Friends of Lambertville Library, a tax-exempt non-profit organization.

THE MUSICAL COMEDY, ONCE UPON A MATTRESS CONTINUES AT THE WASHINGTON CROSSING OPEN AIR THEATRE

The Washington Crossing Open Air Theatre continues its spectacular season of musicals with Once Upon A Mattress.  With music by Mary Rodgers, lyrics by Marshall Barer and book by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller and Marshall Barer, Once Upon A Mattress returns for a second weekend of performances on Friday, September 9, Saturday, September 10 and Sunday, September 11 at 7:30 pm.

If you thought you knew the story of The Princess and The Pea, you may be in for a walloping surprise!  In the world of Once Upon A Mattress, did you know, for instance, that Princess Winnifred actually swam the moat to reach Prince Dauntless the Drab? Or that Lady Larken's love for Sir Harry provided a rather compelling reason that she reach the bridal altar post haste? Or that, in fact, it wasn't the pea at all that caused the princess a sleepless night? Carried on a wave of wonderful songs, by turns hilarious and raucous, romantic and melodic, this rollicking spin on the familiar classic of royal courtship and comeuppance provides for some side-splitting shenanigans. Chances are you'll never look at fairy tales quite the same way again.

The cast of Once Upon A Mattress includes several faces who have become very familiar to OAT audiences over the past two seasons. Lambertville, NJ's very own husband and wife acting team, David and Jenny Whiteman, play King Sextimus and Queen Aggravain. Other OAT regulars include Jordan Brennan as Prince Dauntless, Louis Palena as Sir Harry and Jill Palena as the Pantomime Queen. The role of Princess Winnifred is played to perfection by Jennifer Lameo, known for her many years as a performer in productions at the Bucks County Playhouse.  Once Upon A Mattress is directed and choreographed by Richard Amelius who recently formed the Delaware River Theatre Collective, a group determined to bring live theatre of the highest quality back to the New Hope/Lambertville area.

The Washington Crossing Open Air Theatre production of Once Upon A Mattresswill be performed on Friday, September 9, Saturday, September 10 and Sunday, September 11 also at 7:30 pm.  Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children (ages 12 and under).  Tickets can always be purchased at the Open Air Theatre Box Office prior to the performance. 10-Show Subscriptions are also available for purchase at the Box Office as well.

For complete information about the 2011 Summer Season of mainstage shows, children's theatre productions, movies, directions and more, visit the website at www.dpacatoat.com.  The Washington Crossing Open Air Theatre is located inside Washington Crossing State Park at 355 Washington Crossing-Pennington Road in Titusville, New Jersey. Exhibit: “Go Figure”
Dates: September 10 - 30, 2011

Renowned Bucks County Artist Dot Bunn Opens Major
Figurative Painting Exhibit at Bucks County Gallery of Fine Art

Contemporary Painter Dot Bunn unveils a series of award winning figurative paintings that will captivate the viewer.

September 3, 2011 (NEW HOPE, PA) – September will see the return of a major exhibition of figurative art by nationally acclaimed artist Dot Bunn. Bucks County Gallery of Fine Art located in New Hope PA will host this exhibition when it returns from the state capitol. During August, twenty three oil paintings of figurative art were part of an invitational exhibit at the Art Association of Harrisburg. The September display in New Hope will feature four award winning paintings as well as many previously unseen works before the Harrisburg show. They will be exhibited September 10 - 30 in the gallery's Dutch Room.

Dot Bunn had this to say about her increasing interest in painting people. “Over the last five years I have gradually taken a greater interest in depicting the figure. I find my subjects unexpectedly. A moment encounter with an interesting stranger in a restaurant may become my next painting. My favorite subjects are people doing things they love or working at their jobs. Good painting connects with people on a personal level that taps into their sense of life. One of my most successful paintings, “The Seamstress” seemed to hit that cord. During its exhibition as the first place winner in painting in 2008 at Phillips Mill Open Juried Show there were many viewers that felt that connection. I find that fact motivating and affirming. I am continually searching for my next seamstress.”

Dot states:
“Surely the gift of being creative is a wonderful thing but talent comes from hard work and discipline. The final painting that leaves my easel has a carefully designed structure that guides my choices throughout the process.

Great design is my starting point and many of my paintings had numerous drawings done before the brush touched the surface. We fool ourselves if we think that it is possible to produce meaningful work without learning the skills and lessons of the masters. Although I have my favorites when it comes to subject matter, I believe that all things can be made beautiful if your goal is to apply the principles of composition and the management of color to your work. It is not objects that I strive to paint but the essence of light that surrounds and washes over them.”

Show will include her “Self Portrait”. The gallery is open Monday - Saturday 10am - 5pm, Sunday Noon - 5pm.

Mountain John, received theDr. Clifford Wheeler Mills Memorial Award at the Allied Artists of America Annual Juried Show at the National Arts Club in 2008.

Sock Monkey Magic, received the Award of Excellence from the Berks Art Alliance Open Juried Exhibit at The Reading Public Museum in 2009 and the Weiss Memorial Award from Cheltenham Art Center Exhibition.

Marty, won Overall Best in Show at the Artsbridge, 14th Annual Open Juried Show

Fantasy, received the Award in memory of Joseph Crilley, at the Phillips' Mill, 80th Annual Juried Art Exhibition in 2009 and was selected to be exhibited at Salon International 2009, in San Antonio, Texas.

NAKED IN NEW HOPE ‘11
FIFTH ANNUAL!
A Group Show of 95 Artists. Local and National
September 17 through November 5, 2011

OPENING RECEPTION
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 2011
6:00 TO 9:00 PM

New Hope Sidetracks Art Gallery proudly announces its Fifth Annual Naked in New Hope exhibition, a major group show celebrating the facts and foibles of the human body, beginning with an Opening Reception on Saturday evening, September 17, 2011, from 6 to 9 PM, and extending through November 5, 2011.  As in 2010, the portion of Stockton Avenue directly in front of the Gallery will be closed to traffic during the reception for the safety of the opening night crowd, and to provide space for outdoor refreshments and conversation.

Special for this Fifth Annual show, a second building on the New Hope Arts campus will function as a Naked in New Hope annex, because of the great increase in the number of participating artists.

Headlining Naked in New Hope this year is the work of three principal artists:  painter Dorothy Griderof New Hope, painter Ramón Robledo of Lambertville and sculptor and painter Heather Blume of Harwich Port, Massachusetts.

Ninety-two other artists will participate — sixteen Sidetracks Gallery Resident Artists, as well as guest artists both from Bucks County and from other parts of the nation.  In addition to Grider and Blume, thirty-three additional artists are showing at Sidetracks for the first time.  Sculptures in bronze, terra cotta, welded steel, cast glass, clay, ceramic, wood, hand-made paper and dryer lint wrapped in wire will be on display.  Other media on view at Naked in New Hope range from oil and acrylic to pastel, charcoal to pencil, water-color to photography, collage to pen and ink, woodcut to etching to monotype, egg tempera to tar paper with tar, stained glass to mixed media on paper, highlighter to permanent marker, hand-altered playing cards in jars to found-object construction.

Dorothy Grider appears at Sidetracks courtesy of New Hope Arts where she is one of two local artists featured in a concurrent show entitled  Deux Grandes Dames, opening September 9 and continuing through September 24.  Ricky Godinez and Paul Murphy of Sidetracks Gallery have the privilege to be guest co-curators of this show (which also features modernist print-maker Dee Rosenwald).

Dorothy’s roots lie deep in western Kentucky, but she was early drawn to the New York art scene for study (a lass of only 14).  As a young adult, she began a busy career as an illustrator of children’s books, with over 80 published titles to her credit..  Her original illustrations now form part of the art collection of Western Kentucky University, where she is honored as an illustrious alumna.

In addition to the works exhibited at New Hope Arts, Naked in New Hope welcomes five oil paintings from Dorothy’s 1950 art studies in Parisjust prior to her move to New Hope, where she has lived and worked now for over 60 years!  While her career focus remained centered on New York, her personal life became anchored on the banks of the Delaware.  She is now in the 97th year of her long, creative life.

Ramón Robledo was born in Puerto Rico but grew up in Manhattan where he met his long-time partner, Peter Prorok.  For many years now, they have been co-proprietors of A Stage in Time: Antiques with a Mission, first in New Hope and presently on the Delaware riverbank – almost directly across from Dorothy – in Lambertville, New Jersey.

Ramon has been sketching, drawing and painting from an early age.  He focuses on abstract ideas utilizing different mediums, including pencil, pen and ink, gauche, soft pastels, charcoal and oils.  As mostly a self -taught artist, he experiments with color, mixing mediums and using different surfaces, skirting rules, creating in a variety of styles.

He studied life drawing and fashion illustration at F.I.T and took courses in photography at the School for Visual Arts, both in Manhattan.  After an absence of several years from painting, he was invited to join the first Naked in New Hope art show at Sidetracks in 2007, and has participated in every annual NINH since .  Ramon has returned to what he enjoys best  – producing what his mind visualizes.

Heather Blume is new to Sidetracks and to Naked in New Hope.  But her command of the human form in terra cotta and bronze sculpture, in painting and drawing, in collage and dramatic installations will be well illustrated by the 11 artworks selected for her first exhibition in the New Hope – Lambertville arts community.

Originally from Cape Cod, she returned to Harwich Port as a mature artist, and has been
a resident creative force there ever since.  Provincetown Art Association & Museum will present a special exhibition in April., 2012, entitiled Two Women / Two Generations on Cape Cod, showcasing the work of Heather and her late mother,  Rachel Ellis Kaufman.

Heather has been widely shown from Cape Cod to Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Chicago – and abroad in Spain, Portugal, Bulgaria and Finland.  Three works are in the permanent collection of The British Museum.  A room-size multi-media installation in the Ocean’s Edge Gallery of the Cape Cod Museum of Art, with an extraordinary cut-paper tide-line frieze, was a crowd pleaser in the Fall of 2010.

Redfield purchased as a 100-acre farm back in 1898; many of which are depicted in Redfield's paintings that are displayed in museums and private collections internationally. The artist's former studio is now the living room where a massive window was restored to allow views of the canal and Delaware River beyond. The bridge to New Jersey, the original subject of Redfield's most famous works "The Burning of Center Bridge," is now seen from the window restoration. Another gem is the charming springhouse visible from the dining room window. This same view was the subject of Redfield's painting "South Window" which featured his wife Elise gazing at the springhouse and the gardens beyond. The new addition of a sunroom, mudroom and garage/guest suite blend seamlessly into this magnificent 10-acre property.

The Mill House, Carversville
From mill worker's house to show home, The Mill House has been evolving for three centuries. Originally built by Thomas Ellicott in circa 1784 as a two-story stone residence for workers at the neighboring mills. Its first metamorphosis occurred when the Knights of Pitheas enlarged the house to three apartments during the mid-1860s. The house's next identity took place when renowned artist, Charles Ward maintained it as his first studio in the 1930s. Here is where he completed his famous mural, "Progress and Industry." Then in 1990, the property became a single-family dwelling and today is a stunning showcase of interiors inspired by antiques, art and travel.

Roughly translated in the Lenni Lenape language, Playwicky means "a place full of turkeys." The current owners bought the house in the mid-1990s. In 1929, Playwicky was described in House Beautiful as a "playhouse of two traveled grownups." That description still holds true today.

Ruinas, New Hope
Spanish for ruins, Ruinas is the brainchild of two environmentally conscious homeowners. Not only is the house space efficient, but it's 100% "green." The use of eco-friendly and energy efficient materials throughout the home are in every room including: paint, flooring, cabinets, geothermal heating and cooling, salt free reverse osmosis water filter system, all LED lighting and wind power from PECO to power the rest of the home. The result is a zero carbon footprint. The foundation and landscape is beautiful Bucks County while the interiors have a more contemporary European style. Ruinas is an inspiration to the "green" concept and showcases the future of modern living.

New Hope Celebrates talent on Sept. 29

Musically talented residents and supporters of New Hope and the area will perform at 7:30 PM on Sept. 29 at Bob Egan's New Hope cabaret, located at the Ramada Inn, 6426 Lower York Road in New Hope. The event is being sponsored by Karen Junod, New Hope's State Farm Insurance agent.

The show, a mixture of accomplished vocalists and residents who have never or rarely sang on stage publically, will benefit New Hope Celebrates' continued marketing efforts in the lesbian, gay, transgendered and bisexual (LGBT) community as well as supporting one of it's allies, Bob Egan Entertainment.

Dwayne Dunlevy, well-known local entertainer, will serve the affair as master of ceremonies. Dunlevy is recognized in the area for his live theater and cabaret performances over the past decade as well as his accomplishments as a talent promoter and artist.

Joining him will be area favorite, Broadway performer and former "American Idol" contestant Devyn Rush. A nationally known LGBT singer and songwriter who has frequently entertained in the Bucks County area, Josh Zuckerman, will also headline the show. Zuckerman has won numerous awards for his CD's and his videos are frequent "number one" pick hits on CBS's LOGO cable network.

Additional "star" vocalists scheduled to appear include Philadelphia's Jeff Vitelli and New Hope's Scott Sutherland.

Locally, New Hope Borough council member and Rolling Stones afficionado Rey Velasco will perform some tunes by his favorite musical group. Velasco extemporaneously performed and delighted an audience a few years back at the concert for the locally made film, "Embraceable You" and is a frequent participant in local karaoke contests.

Other local resident singers will be showcased. They include Edward Forrest and Jason Nerys. Forrest and Nerys have often performed at benefits in drag but their solo vocals have not been showcased on stage until the New Hope Celebrates show. Kimble, a teni-baritone, will sing popular cabaret favorites while Nerys, a tenor, will render songs made famous by Billie Holiday.

They will be joined by Trenton's Teyd Jamison, a frequent guest at the Raven's piano bar, who will sing Broadway show tunes. Ted has appeared at Carnegie Hall and off-Broadway in New York City.

They will be accompanied by pianist and impresario Bob Egan.

"We are very delighted that known performers will be joined by local talents who have not had a chance to shine for a cabaret audience," commented Daniel Brooks, founder of New Hope Celebrates. "The show is yet another example of what New Hope stands for–a truly mixed conglomeration, bursting with talent "
Ryan Fuller, general manager of the Raven and NHC Board vice-president added, "This is a first-of-it's kind show but we hope to make this event at least semi-annual because it gives everyone a chance for the spotlight. It's bound to be a lot of fun "

HIGH HOLY DAYS HIGHLY ANTICIPATED

NEW HOPE, Pa. – Rabbi Diana Miller, the new spiritual leader of Kehilat Hanahar, has spent the month of August settling in to her duties at the Little Shul by the River. Rabbi Diana's background in social work adds emotional and humanistic insights to traditional interpretations of religious texts, and members are encouraged to find their own individual connection to the High Holy Days, also referred to as the "Days of Awe."

"This time offers an ideal opportunity to reconnect with G-D and ourselves," explains Rabbi Diana, "especially for those who have been in exile from their deepest selves. It is a serious time for renewal, contemplation, and an honest inventory about where we have made the mark." In this season, Jews return to the roots of their faith with introspection and hope for forgiveness, beginning with services on Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, on Wednesday evening, September 28th, and morning services on Thursday and Friday, September 29th and 30th. NJ Artist Comes Home to Hunterdon County
Contact: Kelly Sullivan
732.233.5614
kelly@kellysullivanfineart.com

After years of living and studying around the country, nationally recognized artist Kelly Sullivan returns home to Hunterdon County, NJ. Kelly is best known for her large collaborative painting created to commemorate events around the country. Over 70,000 people have stuck their fingers in paint at her request to help create these life-size pieces she calls FingerSmears, including figures like Bruce Springsteen and The Rolling Stones. Companies such as Johnson & Johnson, Oshkosh B'Gosh, Pepsi, and Mercedes Benz have commissioned her works, which have raised over $150,000 for charities across the country.

While Kelly considers herself blessed to finger paint for a living and continues to create these vibrant pieces, she has become more and more drawn to a practice dedicated to classical art. "The subtly and discipline required challenge me, but I still feel the need for a little flare." Over the past several years, Kelly has turned her focus to oil paint. She sought out mentorship from artists she admired, such as David Laffel, Sherrie McGraw, Robert Liberace, Scott Christensen, and Carolyn Anderson. As a result she has brought her work to a new level and produced two consecutively sold out shows called "Encounters in Oil". At "Encounters" Kelly's subjects sit in a gallery setting for about an hour as Kelly whirls their likeness across the canvas in bold strokes, and then finishes by finessing the paint delicately to capture the nuances of her sitter. If they are pleased with her bold style they purchase their portrait for a small fee. If not, she thanks them for adding to her diligent practice and they part ways.

She returns to Hunterdon County to continue her "Encounters in Oil" series, and to study and work with one of the regions finest and most prolific painters, Robert Beck. Sullivan's new studio is within the walls of The Robert Beck Academy, where she will also be teaching the introductory and early level painting courses. "Much of being a good teacher is about knowing the information, but equally important is the ability to express your passion and enthusiasm for the work– and I have an abundance of that!" says Sullivan. "I also feel fortunate to be able to work with Robert, and study under him. His work is solid and powerful, and his spirit is generous – all good things." "And to have yoga and Thai food right next door, I think I landed in heaven," she adds.

KEHILAT HANAHAR’S NEW RABBI LEADS HER FIRST SHABBAT SERVICE

NEW HOPE, Pa. – Earlier this month, Rabbi Diana Miller (pictured in the accompanying photograph) conducted her first Friday evening Shabbat Service as the new Rabbi of Kehilat HaNahar, The Little Shul by the River in New Hope.  Shabbat (the Hebrew word for “Sabbath”) is considered “the day of rest and spiritual rejuvenation” and is traditionally celebrated each week from Friday night until sundown on Saturday.  Rabbi Miller assumed the pulpit position that had been held by Rabbi Sandy Roth who passed away earlier this year.   She holds a Bachelor’s degree cum laude in Women’s Studies from Barnard College, a Masters in Social Work from Hunter College, and a Masters of Hebrew Letters from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College.

Freewheeling in Lambertville
(Two Artists Push Pedals)

Artists Richard Harrington and Charles Katzenbach are big fans of bicycles. They love the elegant, geometric design. They appreciate the simple, efficient engineering. They fondly recall the Schwinn Spyders and English racers and classic Rollfasts of their youth and the freedom that a bicycle of your own represented.
“I couldn’t wait to get on my bike,” said Katzenbach. “The colors, the motion, the world speeding by . . .”
When they began planning their joint show for The Artists’ Gallery in Lambertville, Harrington and Katzenbach decided to make bicycles the theme. They also decided to make the show align with a few other topics close to their hearts: recycling, reducing waste, and sharing.
“It kills me to see a bike thrown out with the trash,” said Harrington. “A bike shouldn’t be in a landfill.”
Harrington and Katzenbach hope that a few more will be saved from that fate this month as their show, “Freewheeling,” aims to help support and promote the mission of Pedals for Progress, a High Bridge, NJ, organization that collects used bikes and ships them overseas to provide affordable, nonpolluting transportation for the world’s working poor.
“What Pedals for Progress does is a very effective form of economic aid,” said Katzenbach. “They reduce waste here at home, support a green technology, and provide basic transportation to the poor.”
Katzenbach, who primarily creates abstracts with oil paints on glass and mirrors, recycles cast-off glass and wood in the work he constructs in his studio on his Hopewell farm. In the case of “Freewheeling,” he’s recycled some bicycle parts as well.
“I’ve been experimenting with bike wheels primarily,” Katzenbach said. “A number of spiral designs have resulted. It’s been fun.”
Harrington, who paints in a representational style in watercolor and acrylics, has always had a fascination with vehicles of all sorts. An assistant professor of illustration at Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia, he is known for his automotive art, which ranges from classic beauties to rusting hulks in junkyards.
“I enjoy finding the beauty in subjects that others pass by or easily dismiss,” says Harrington. “I found while walking through Center City Philadelphia how interesting the different bicycles chained to various racks and posts were, and they intrigued me enough to begin photographing, sketching, and painting pictures of them. I became equally interested in the different types of people that owned and used the bikes, and have included some of them in the works created for ‘Freewheeling.’”
“Freewheeling” will be on display at The Artists’ Gallery in Lambertville Friday, September 9 through Sunday, October 2.  An opening reception will be held Saturday, September 10 from 4 pm to 8 pm.
Harrington and Katzenbach will donate 20 percent of the purchase price of any works sold during this exhibition to Pedals For Progress. In addition, representatives from Pedals for Progress will be on hand at the The Artists’ Gallery to accept bicycle donations on October 2 from 1 to 4 PM.

With tens of thousands of like-minded singles in the tri-state area, ANaturalAffinity.com is helping to meet the needs of this growing population.

In addition to a range of options for creating one-to-one dating connections, A Natural Affinity offers an array of interesting and engaging Activity Groups. “Many people find that getting together in a group setting based on shared activities provides a more comfortable alternative to a blind date” says Ms. Gruenwald.  Groups include: Hiking Clubs, Natural Food Potlucks, Indie Film Goers, Arts & Culture Group, Organic Gardeners Group, Drum Circles and Community Service Projects Group.  The Events Calendar has a variety of get-togethers scheduled including plays, dinners, hikes, and movies.

Helping to further enhance the sense of comfort and connection among site members is the 'Degrees of Connection' feature. With a regionally based membership of people who share common lifestyle pursuits, very often site members have overlapping circles of friends in common.  The site automatically provides a visual representation of these extended ‘friend of a friend’ connections. For example, viewing the profile of Jeremy, you might find that your friend Natalie is friends with Mary, who is friends with Steve, who in turn, is friends with Jeremy.

Launched in March of this year, the site already has many wonderful success stories of new found love. “Thanks to your site I met a wonderful man. We have so much in common and have been happily dating for over two months. Without A Natural Affinity we would not have met. I hope that many other people are as successful and happy with the site as I have been! Thank you very much!”   Sara K., Philadelphia.

Ms. Gruenwald designed ANaturalAffinity.com as an alternative to the ‘dating as commerce’ model of so many dating and online social networks. The site has no advertising and has been priced at an affordable $6 a month.

International Font Development Company Announces Expansion of ITC Weber Hand Font Family Created by Artist/Designer LisaBeth Weber.

Noted Bucks County, PA regional artist/writer/musician and creative business strategist LisaBeth Weber is adding to her plate of accomplishments with an expanded release of her font family via ITC (International Typeface Corporation) by Monotype Imaging.

Carversville, PA - Back in 1999, ITC (International Typeface Corporation) developed a font created by LisaBeth.  They chose to title it “ITC Weber Hand”, and it soon became one of ITC’s most popular handwriting fonts.  Over these years, Weber Hand has only been available a standard weight, leaving users to look elsewhere for a Bold and/or Condensed handwriting font.  That is, until now.  This month, an extension to the ITC Weber Hand family was announced on ITCFonts.com, including Bold, Condensed, and Condensed Bold, to add versatility to the standard version.

This is a big deal in the font world, since most handwriting fonts are single-weight, standalone products.  Allan Haley, Director of Words & Letters at Monotype explains why ITC Weber Hand was chosen for further development among all the other single-weight, handwriting fonts.  “Monotype Imaging introduced an application called FlipFont that enables switching out fonts on mobile devices, along with a suite of fonts to support the application.  Several of these fonts were of the handwriting variety and became very popular, compared to more structured fonts.  Seeing this, we realized that a handwriting font with bold and condensed family members might not only prove useful in supporting mobile device operating systems, but also in a variety of other graphic communication environments.  ITC Weber Hand was chosen because it has been a consistently popular design since its release, has been used on everything from menus to billboards, and because LisaBeth Weber, the typeface’s designer, was more than agreeable to having more designs added to her original family.”

Adding the new designs was a collaborative project between Weber and the type development team at Monotype Imaging.  Now, as a family of four designs, and equally at home in headlines and short blocks of text copy, Weber Hand can be used in brochures, advertisements, logotypes, periodicals, package design and – perhaps – even mobile devices.  This is clearly a font family that will not collect dust on your hard drive.  Weber comments, “Thanks to Monotype Imaging’s support, ITC Weber Hand has grown into a suite of warm, friendly designs that are well-suited to a wide range of applications.”

Lettering has always been a passion for LisaBeth.  In the first grade, her favorite subject was penmanship and when she eventually got her first checkbook, Weber was disappointed to learn that her signature was supposed to be the same on every check.  She happily says, “I brake for cool signs’ should be my bumper sticker.”  Although this typeface design mimics handwriting, Weber Hand has an underlying decorous, gently structured quality.  This, along with additional weights, makes for a remarkably useful typeface family in a relatively small package that will surely continue to be a popular handwriting type with broad appeal.
The ITC Weber Hand Family can be purchased directly from LisaBeth at www.lisabethweber.com, and is being featured prominently (among the thousands of fonts available) for the entire month of August on www.itcfonts.com, as well as www.fonts.com, www.linotype.com, and more.

DELAWARE RIVER THEATRE COLLECTIVE FORMS TO BRING PROFESSIONAL THEATRE BACK TO NEW HOPE, PENNSYLVANIA

A newly formed organization, the Delaware River Theatre Collective, has announced its intention to bring professional theatre back to the towns of New Hope, Pennsylvania and Lambertville, New Jersey.  Along with the goal of presenting quality theatrical productions for the region is the establishment of a permanent venue to house ongoing performances, such as the historic Bucks County Playhouse.  It has been months since Stonebridge Bank foreclosed on the decades old Bucks County Playhouse and despite proclamations from a number of groups that it would be purchased, renovated, and reopened in time for the 2011 Summer season, little has been done.

On Monday, July 18, 2011 at 8 pm, the Delaware River Theatre Collective will hold a fundraising concert entitled "One Night Only" at the Stephen J. Buck Memorial Theater at the New Hope-Solebury High School Auditorium, 180 W. Bridge Street in New Hope, PA. The concert will consist of musical theatre showstoppers performed by Broadway actors including: Adam Halpin (Glory Days, Rent), Rodney Hicks (Scottsboro Boys, Jesus Christ Superstar), Morgan James (Addams Family, Wonderland), Brian Ogilvie (Mary Poppins), Laura Beth Wells (Spider-Man) and other industry professionals including some Playhouse alumni: Jordan Brennan, Lauren Brownstein, Nicole Calabrese, David Campbell, Zachary Clause, Jennifer Harrison, Jennifer Lameo, Adam Levinskas, Jill Palena, Louis Palena, Jihyen Park, Jenny Pilong, Marrick Smith and Dana Winkle.

Broadway show cards autographed by the casts of Anything Goes, The Book of Mormon, Catch Me If You Can, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Motherfu**er with the Hat, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Sister Act, Spider-Man and War Horse will also be auctioned off with all proceeds going toward the Collective's future goal of securing a performance space.

Artistic Director, Richard Amelius said, “Performers came out of the woodwork to help but many couldn’t physically be with us on the 18th. These posters and some video testimonials are expressions of solidarity from our fellow actors. New Hope, Lambertville and the other river communities of this area are so rich in art that the absence of theatre is really sad. This region deserves a professional theatre company and more importantly, they want one. We stand united in the effort to give it to them, inside the Bucks County Playhouse or otherwise. We also hope to generate interest within the communities, reach out to the other organizations and build a collective that will make this possible.”

The Delaware River Theatre Collective's "One Night Only" fundraising concert will be held at the Stephen J. Buck Memorial Theater at the New Hope-Solebury High School on Monday, July 18, 2011 beginning at 8 pm.  Seating for the event will be general admission and donations begin at $25 per person. Reservations can be made by emailing: info@delawarerivertheatrecollective.org or visit the Delaware River Theatre Collective's website at www.delawarerivertheatrecollective.org.

From “The Roy Rogers Show”

Saturday, August 13 and Sunday, August 14, 2011

New Hope, PA (June 15, 2011) – The 54th Annual New Hope Automobile Show is proud to announce Porsche as its presenting sponsor.  The popular antique and classic car show will take place on Saturday, August 13 and Sunday, August 14, 2011 at the New Hope-Solebury High School. The grounds are open from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm and tickets are sold at the gate:  $5 for the general public, $3 for seniors and free for military and children under 12 years old.  Service members and their immediate families attend free.  Convenient, on-site parking is available for $5 a day.  For more information, please visit www.NewHopeAutoShow.com or call 215.862.5665.

On display this year is “Nellybelle” – the iconic jeep from the popular Roy Rogers Show. Acquired last year by Weidel Boxwood Farm as part of the Christie’s auction of Roy Rogers memorabilia, Nellybelle is not only a piece of Hollywood history but also an emotional attachment to owner Pam Weidel.   “I called all my cars that over the years.  I’d say, ‘c’mon Nellybelle,’” commented Weidel.

Celebrating its 54th year, 2011 will be a tribute to those cool cars with tailfins.  The coveted auto show poster sports a Cadillac Eldorado Brougham, owned by Gene Epstein of Wrightstown, PA.  Released in 1957, the Eldorado Brougham was a hand-built limited-edition four-door hardtop sedan derived from the Park Avenue and Orleans show cars of 1953-1954.  Designed by Ed Glowacke, the Brougham featured America's first completely pillarless four-door body styling along with a brushed stainless steel roof, quad headlights and unique trim.  Tail styling treatments followed the Eldorado theme with "suicide" type hanging for the rear doors.

The New Hope Automobile Show continues the tradition of providing educational scholarships for students at New Hope-Solebury High School and several civic groups in the region including local sports clubs (baseball, soccer, football), emergency squads and firehouses.  Last year the show donated several thousand dollars in scholarships as part of the New Hope Community Association.  In honor of the late John Brillman, former president of the Community Association and 40 year auto show veteran, a new scholarship, “The John Brillman Scholarship” will be awarded next spring to a senior representing the spirit of community service.

Not only does the New Hope Auto Show feature the finest in classic and antique vehicles, but it also gives out awards for first, second and third place in more than 50 categories. All vehicles entered must be judge ready.  At the end of each day, a parade of champions takes place with all of the winners of each category.

The New Hope Automobile Show, sponsored by the New Hope-Solebury Community Association, is one of the oldest and most celebrated auto shows in the country.  The show features many of the finest antique and classic automobiles and motorcycles from across the eastern United States.  The two-day event (with different cars on exhibit each day) has been staged in historic New Hope, Pennsylvania, for over 50 years. From its inception, the show has provided scholarships for students at the New Hope-Solebury High School.

DRIVING ENTHUSIASTS INVITED TO COMPETE IN THE SECOND ANNUAL NEW HOPE AUTO SHOW
“ROAD RALLY”

Start Your Engines for An Adventurous, Fun-Filled Ride
Sunday, July 31, 2011 At 9:00 am

New Hope, PA (June 23, 2011) – The 54th Annual New Hope Automobile Show has announced its second annual “Road Rally.” Introduced last year as an event to build excitement for the New Hope Automobile Show, the Road Rally is a spirited competitive race open to all legal driving enthusiasts. The rally takes place on Sunday, July 31, 2011 at 9:00 am.  All participants should meet at the New Hope-Solebury High School parking lot.  Registration is not required and all automobiles are welcome. Participants will receive a list of questions to help navigate to the final destination.  The rally is not a timed race nor based on speed, but a quest to answer the “scavenger-like” questions correctly and make it to the “unknown” last stop where winners will be announced.  Visit www.NewHopeAutoShow.com for more information.

Karl Weimer, coordinator of the Road Rally, commented, “What’s great about our Road Rally is that anyone and any type of vehicle can participate.  Last year our drivers ranged in age and car-- some common as a Nissan or Honda and others classic as MGB’s, VW Beetle, Porsche and Kharmann Ghia.  For 2011, we’ll have you driving all over the beautiful back roads of Solebury Township and maybe even across the river.  Then when we all meet up at the final location for food/drink and to announce the winners, it’s a fun occasion to trade stories with one another about the ride.”

Deborah Lang, chairperson of the 54th Annual New Hope Automobile Show further added, “ Last year was my first Road Rally and we ran the gamut.  We oohed and aahed at the scenery. We laughed at the clues and each other's crazy jokes.  And we almost ran out of gas!  I am very excited to participate again.”

The popular antique and classic car show will take place on Saturday, August 13 and Sunday, August 14, 2011 at the New Hope-Solebury High School. The grounds are open from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm daily and tickets are sold at the gate:  $5 for the general public, $3 for seniors and free for military and children under 12 years old.  Service members and their immediate families attend free.  Convenient, on-site parking is available for $5 a day.  For more information, please visit www.NewHopeAutoShow.com or call 215.862.5665.

The atelier program is the method by which renowned artists including Ingres, Sargent, Cassatt, and Eakins were all taught. Gold Light founder and instructor John Murdoch studied at the American Academy of Art, the School of Representational Art in Chicago, and The Atelier, in Minneapolis.

The Gold Light Scholarship will cover nearly 50% of full time tuition for one year for a student wishing to study full time at Gold Light Atelier and complete the atelier program. NHS Diversity Committee named recipient of NHC grant

New Hope-Solebury School District’s Diversity Committee was named  recipient of a $500 grant awarded by New Hope Celebrates (NHC), a lesbian, gay, transgendered or bisexual (LGBT) marketing group in New Hope, Pa. The award will be made at a post-Pride fund raiser being held at the Raven, Route 179 (385 W. Bridge Street) in New Hope on July 15 at 9 PM.

NHC staged a week long Pride festival in New Hope and Lambertville, NJ mid-May at the commencement of gay Pride season throughout the world. It was their 8th festival.

The Diversity Committee of New Hope-Solebury school district is committed to ensuring student harmony despite ethnic, religious, cultural, gender or preferential differences. It deals with such matters as bullying or student harassment. Their role will be in implementing the building of level task force groups to expand diversity initiatives, including LGBT issues, at the high school. The grant is earmarked for use toward greater sensitivity to the needs of LGBT students at the high school.

The diversity committee  is currently discussing the formation of a school based committee to address the issue of a possible gay-straight alliance club, known as GSA. There are now in existence a number of such organizations in other Bucks County high schools but none currently at New Hope-Solebury high school.

The original GSA was the mission of a straight student who, in 1988, wanted his high school to do more about LGBT bullying and harassment. Now GSA’s are certified clubs within over 4,000 high schools nationally and often monitored by GLSEN, the national Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network.

“We are so pleased by the progress NHS has made this year in becoming more aware of the unique experiences of their LGBT teenage populace,” said Daniel Brooks, founder and Executive Director of New Hope Celebrates.

“The most moving part of our recent Pride parade, to me,” said Brooks, “was seeing NHS school board members, teachers and students carrying our giant rainbow flag, leant to us by sister-city Key West, Fl. Dr. Raymond Boccuti, superintendent of New Hope-Solebury school district, lead the group. That cohesiveness from NHS High School sent a message to all of our area teenagers that while they are unique they are treated and  supported the same. It was totally inspiring and gave me yet another reason to be proud of New Hope–always a town where there is respect for variance and individuality.”

Dr. Boccuti said that he was honored and delighted to receive the stipend. Because of a prior commitment, he will be represented at the event by his assistant, Joyce Mundy, who had previously held the position of middle school principal at NHS. She will speak on his behalf.

A former NHS student, Dylan Platt, will also speak as representative of LGBT students.
Platt wrote to Brooks praising NHC’s Pride festival efforts in the community and encouraging the organization to look forward into the NHS high school staff as well as students in an effort to aid them in becoming more aware of  LGBT student harassment by students at the school.

Since then the New Hope Borough Council, under the leadership of Community Affairs members Geri Delevich– also a NHC member-- and Rey Velasco, and accompanied by Platt,  met with school officials to create a foundational forum for discussion of general bullying matters. There are plans to continue the dialogue.

Friday’s event at the Raven will also feature a variety show hosted by Michael Gardner, aka Miss Pumpkin, and will include local talent. The show will be followed by DJ dancing. A $10 minimum contribution to NHC will be charged.
The event is sponsored, in part, by Wells Fargo.

Historical Society announces winners of photo competition

More than two hundred photographs were submitted by fifty-two contestants from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Virginia for the New Hope Historical Society’s first Garden Photo competition. A wide variety of subjects from cherry trees to hummingbirds and Elizabethan gardens, to poppies and katydids and milkweeds created a lot of work for the six judges of the competition.

And when all the judges completed their evaluations, a stunning close-up of an intense preying mantis won them over.  Jerry Huber-Gibson’s intriguing photo of the bright green dictygtera dominated the field.

The first place winner will receive a $100 gift certificate for New Hope Photo, an autographed copy of Derek Fell’s popular book, Beautiful Bucks County, two tickets for the annual garden tour and a limited edition crystal pearl clematis bracelet created by New Hope artist, Pearl Mintzer.  The total value of the package is $200.

Robert Cannon’s brilliant photo, Autumn in Color, Bushkill Falls, gained second place.  He will receive the Beautiful Bucks Countybook, two tickets for the garden tour and the bracelet.

A spectacular pink flower with blue insect photo called Borrowed and Blue by Nicole Lombardi won the competition’s third place prizes including Derek Fell’s book and two tickets to the garden tour.

As an added bonus, all winners will receive complimentary admission to the annual spring garden party to be held on June 13 at the Parry Mansion in New Hope, where winning photos will be displayed with the awarded ribbons.  The photo competition was held in conjunction with the New Hope Historical Society’s 18th Annual Garden Tour.
